Treat All Public School Kids Fairly
The Issue
San Antonio families deserve respect and support—no matter which public school they choose. But some politicians, including District 6 Councilmember Ric Galvan, are trying to divide our community by dismissing charter school students as if they aren’t real public school kids. Let’s focus on what really matters: reading, safety, and great teachers for every child.
Last month, Galvan opposed an affordable housing unit because it would also house a PreK charter school. Rather than trying to provide families with both affordable housing and a high-quality, convenient, no-cost PreK program, he fought against it. His reason? He thinks charter schools aren’t public schools.
That’s wrong thinking, and Galvan needs to be schooled.
The Truth
➡️ 1 in 4 students in District 6 attend a public charter school.
➡️ 83% of San Antonians support charter schools as part of their public education system.
➡️ Charter students in San Antonio are showing stronger growth in reading, including for historically underserved students.
➡️ Parents are already choosing what works: since 2022, charter enrollment has grown 48.3% in District 6.
By framing charters as a threat rather than a public school option, he dismisses thousands of San Antonio parents—especially Latino and working-class families—who choose these schools for their kids.
It’s time for parents to speak up and be heard with #GalvanDoesntGetIt.

Families are tired of Councilmember Ric Galvan beating up on charter schools.
Here’s what a San Antonio teacher, college student, high school student and mom had to say at a recent City Council meeting:
Families deserve respect, not pushback, for making the best choice for their children. That’s why we’re standing with parents in District 6 and across the city to push back against rhetoric that divides us and to demand leaders who put kids first.
