Show Up for San Antonio’s Students
#ShowUpSA
What's Keeping Kids from School
in San Antonio?
San Antonio has the highest chronic absenteeism rate among large Texas cities. and we know our city can do better to show up for students and families.
This fall, Futuro San Antonio took the time to listen to families in our city. We surveyed 505 parents and caregivers of PK–12 students citywide to learn the reasons why students miss school.
Their responses reveal a clear picture of the top three challenges:
- Health challenges
- Transportation
- Caregiving conflicts
This report highlights what families are telling us and what it will take for city and county leaders to help every child show up ready to learn.

Chronic absenteeism isn't about apathy.
It's about access.
Why Showing Up Matters
- Only 48% of San Antonio’s 3rd-8th graders are reading on grade level
- Students with good attendance are 2x as likely to score proficient in reading and math
- A 1% increase in attendance = 1.5% more students passing the 3rd-grade reading test
(see City Education Partners’ Student Absenteeism Report for more attendance patterns across San Antonio)
Every school day a student misses is a missed chance to build lifelong literacy. Kids can't learn if they're not in school.
Every day counts. Every child’s future matters.
Too many kids are missing too many days of school. Together, we are sounding the alarm on chronic absenteeism in our city. By signing onto this pledge, you commit to joining our movement and telling San Antonio and Bexar County leaders that now is the time to enact policies that help families and their kids get to school every day.
Because when San Antonio shows up for its kids, our kids show up for school.
